We use science to help elephants and people.

Using a science-based approach, our mission is to help Sri Lanka become a better place for elephants and people.

Welcome to
The Sri Lanka Elephant Project

The Sri Lanka Elephant Project is a conservation initiative supported by the
Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden.

Our project is a collaboration between researchers and emerging conservation biologists from the Oklahoma City Zoo (US) and the University of Peradeniya (Sri Lanka). We conduct integrative research on elephant behavior, ecology, and physiology. We also collaborate with local communities to characterize human attitudes and relations with elephants. This information is used to inform and develop sustainable solutions for coexistence.

Furthermore, we have invested heavily in developing conservation capacity for Sri Lankan students through research assistantships and biodiversity research grants. Click here to learn more about these initiatives.
